I was going through my friends blog and was surprised to find the no. of people who detested the name chennai. I feel that all those people have lost their marbles and that they should be happy that atleaast our govt. didn't come up with a name like bengalooru. Is it just me or does that name remind you of toilets.
Lets also take a minute to count the no. of syllables in bengalooru. That's two more than chennai. Chennai is also a whole lot easier to pronounce than Madras as it has more vowel sounds. Try saying it and see.
Other hilarious name changes:
1.gulbarga to kalburki.
2.belgaum to belgavi
3.calcutta to kolkota( proving what i,ve always said.. That bongs cannot pronounce the letter "a" esp. when it comes between two consonants(correct the spelling))
4.Mysore to mysooru
5.Trivandrum to Thiruvananthapuram( i'm not even sure that i've spelt that right which i feel was the secret intention of the kerala govt.)
These among other name changes makes me feel chennai is by far the best name change.( mumbai sounds ok though)
I am definitely against the pro Madras and Anti Chennai movement.

Though I am not from South, I agree. And anyway the name Madras has been misused by calling all south Indians Madrasi.
Also Chennai sounds good(Indianised) and is better than Madras which sounds a bit foreignish concocted.

What I also luv about chennai is that it is a pet cute version of the long historic name this place had before the Britishers turned up. Its more like falling back on history wit a modern twist. That's interesting!

hey divya started a lot before me. my point is that it took her so long to gather that support. i on the other hand have gathered 4 supporters in little less than 2 days. just imagine the no. of pro chennai people i can round up in the same time that she had.
i informed divya sometime back that her profile showed chennai. she thanked me and said she would change it to madras asap. i just went back to her to her blog and guess what. it still showed chennai. that could mean only one thing. somewhere deep down you(divya) like the name chennai and cannot change it.:) Madras sucks.. chennai rocks

i'm pro madras all the way dude...though ocassionally i do use chennai when i speak or write(jus out of habbit) but deep down from the bottom of my heart(it's a bit too much right??) i still love the elegance of Madras. to me it somehow oozes style and attitude.back in those ol' days of madaras it gave it's people something to be proud of cos all we had then were catfights between two prominnt political parties( the cats still persist)

The bottom line is the name of the city is Chennai.. and no matter how much u cry or bawl it will stay that way.
i'm in full support of u vinpil.. chennai is def a better name.. especially in comparison to bengalooroo and kolkata and such..

i'm not someone unknown to vinod pillai...its a conversation that we've been having, as ridiculous and pointless it may seem.i know for a fact that saying 'piss off' or 'shut up' is not going to offend vinod pillai's sensibilites. so if you're feeling so bad about it, then dont read my comments.because at the end of the day, vinpil and i know that this entire thing is something to laugh about, and i'm not actually going to start an anti chennai rally.i honestly cant do a thing to change this city's name.
